Celebrating that magic milestone of your child’s 1st birthday!

I don’t know about you but I have always felt that your baby’s first birthday milestone should really involve presents for the parents for surviving one whole year of parenting challenges!

For my son’s first birthday we went to the park with some friends and had some cake then had a grown up BBQ with lots of champagne to celebrate our success!

Either way that first year is full of highs and lows as we begin to navigate our way through our new role as parents.  There is lots to celebrate - starting with welcoming them into the world, first smiles, sitting, clapping, crawling and possibly walking.

Within that first year our babies change more than at any other time in their lives.

I think that is worth celebrating!

Sussex is lucky to have many local businesses supplying products and services to help us mark this magic milestone.

Gifts and keepsakes

When thinking about presents I am all about the personalisation!  A local business I turn to regularly is Nibs and Scribbles. George is a local mum to two gorgeous boys and is a very talented artist.  She uses her talents to create beautiful art for nurseries and children’s bedrooms as well as gift items like placemats.

When my daughter turned 1 I presented her with a beautiful blanket made from her baby clothes.  It is so precious to me, and I know it will be to her as she grows.  Gro and Sew is based in Horsham, create beautiful keepsakes from those much loved but outgrown baby clothes.  Every time I look at it, different memories come to mind about those early days.  It’s like my own time machine!

First birthday outfits

First birthday outfits are often carefully thought about and planned in advance.  Something special that will look good in the photographs!  Look no further than Sussex business Olivier’s Boutique,  (hyperlink: https://oliviersboutique.com), run by a Sussex mummy, where you can get gorgeous outfits and clothing personalised with little ones name or their birthday number adorned on the front.

On the same note Emma runs Little Hippo - and my fave are her birthday crowns.  These look fab in the birthday photos!

Capturing the moment in time with a first birthday photoshoot

Talking of photos - as I have written above your little one turning 1 is a HUGE milestone.  Newborn photography is very popular, and becoming more and more popular are ‘first birthday photo shoots’.

Many photographers offer the cake smash.  To me this is a little dated now and in my experience many babies hate it as you’ve never given them cake before so the texture and taste is alien to them!

In order to offer something to my families that is a little different to really help them celebrate this special milestone Photography For Little People by Rebecca launched THE PAINT SMASH!  This is so much fun and creates really colourful photos!  I start the session off with a traditional portrait mini session - we can get happy smiley portraits, perhaps in a favourite outfit, or one of my many cute outfits.

Then out comes the paint! Big multi colour dollops on the floor are inviting to touch (who can avoid touching wet paint!)… soon little ones will be crawling through, then touching their noses, cheeks, chin and become a multi coloured masterpiece!

Look at the joy on Noah’s face!

How to celebrate on the big day!!

Babies love sensory play - paints, fabrics, colours and a local business offering all of this is The Creation Station. Melanie, a local mum of 4, offers a host of weekly classes for children from 0-5.  A fabulous offering for a first birthday is her ‘Arty Parties’.  Melanie takes care of everything…including the cleaning up!!  You can combine an Arty Party with a Paint Smash shoot, and we offer a special deal if you do.

It is always great to support Sussex businesses.  Do get in touch with the businesses above if you are planning a milestone first birthday.
